The Routes

So how did the government and Flynt get the stone to springfield?

Factors

Among the considerations for possible routes was that 1) gneiss (like granite) is/was heavy; 2) the elevation at the quarry was 570f & at the County Road (K-Mart area) was 374f; 3) Cartage at the time was limited to horse (and/or oxen) powered (or drawn;) 4) all of the existing roads (at that time) required some hill climbing (with loads) on the way to Springfield; 5) Steep descents (with loads) could also present problems.

The ideal route would be to avoid (as much as possible) climbing (& descending) hills, or at least doing so at reasonable grades.

Flynt probably tried all the available routes.

The Routes

Hovey-BaldPeak Roads. This is most likely, and probably the reason for the discontinuing of part of the Bald Peak road after the Boston & Albany, and later, the New London Northern Railroad & Flynt RRs were constructed. At the junction of Hovey & Bald Peak roads the elevation was 832 feet requiring a climb from 586f at the Southern end of Hovey in about a mile. The descent is a bit steeper, going back to 587f at the bend in the current BP road. On the Northern (closed) section of BP road, after an initial mild rise, it is mostly a reasonable descent to the County Road.

Warriner-Reimer-Silver St. A less likely route, because of initial ascent of the Warriner Road, which climbs from 586f to over 800f in less than a quarter of a mile. However, after that initial climb, the route improves.

Macomber-Hospital Roads. First, the initial section of what is now Macomber rd (East leg) was than called Tilden rd which climbed to about 700f, before descending Bunyan Mtn to rte 32 (the first section was renamed Macomber, the middle section has been discontinued, & and the lower section is now called Bunyan Rd - it also must be considered as a possible route.) When Macomber turns North it too is discontinued, until it reaches the MSH/MDC complex of buildings. It does not continue down to the power plant, where I think the road displayed on the 1844 map was.

UpperPalmer-BaldPeak Roads. This route makes the most sense, but has little supporting map data, other the topographical maps. This is a hypothetical route outlined which would have required Flynt to carve out a short cut between elevations 550-600 feet along (what is now) the Upper Palmer Road, to where the Children's Colony was, cutting accross to the current Bald Peak Road. It Would then use the Northern extension of Bald Peak Road and the Western extension of the old Hospital Road to get to the County Road to Springfield to build the Armory - the grade was more conducive to haulage than others.

Palmer Quad. shows the MDC area & South to just North of the quarry.
