Upper Palmer Road
Upper Palmer Road

Today, the Upper Palmer Road heads North from the end of Margaret St, just North of where the Flynt Quarry used to be. As well, it terminates at the intersection of what is commonly known as the Hospital Road, and it (Upper Palmer Road) becomes State Avenue. (A point of confusion, is the sign that indicates State Avenue continues on what is commonly known as Hospital Road.)

State Avenue terminates at the bridge (to Palmer) and in Palmer is Bridge St.)

The 1844 map has what became the Upper Palmer Road, terminating at the intersection of Hovey & Warriner Roads (later & now, Stebbins Road.) What the Upper Palmer Road was called then is unknown. This is the first map showing the roads as they existed 160 years ago, and probably back to late 1700s.

On the 1857 Map, (as on later maps) the entire Upper Palmer Road does appear, all the way to Bridge St. This probably the result of 1) the contruction the Alms House and later incarnations; 2) the availability of Boston & Albany RR at the Palmer station. (The Flynt quarry probably still carted their stone on this route, before they built their own RR spur to the New London Northern RR in Monson.)

One point of curiousity is the existence of the Children's Colony Road, which might have served as an early part of the Upper Palmer Road.
